Abstract

These programs provide a method for copying many files stored on a personal computer (PC) between the PC and the IBM System/38 without an operator. It prevents operator error during copying. It allows a developer to save the list of files to copy, and use the saved list to copy again at a later time. The copy may be run by an operator less skilled than the developer of the file list. The method is illustrated in the figure and is explained as follows: (1) The developer types a list of files and stores the list in a System/38 source member. (2) The operator asks a PC program to copy the list of files to the PC disk or diskette. The operator may specify a date, and only files changed after that date are copied to the PC.

Copying of Files From a Personal Computer to IBM System/38

These programs provide a method for copying many files stored on a personal computer (PC) between the PC and the IBM System/38 without an operator. It prevents operator error during copying. It allows a developer to save the list of files to copy, and use the saved list to copy again at a later time. The copy may be run by an operator less skilled than the developer of the file list. The method is illustrated in the figure and is explained as follows: (1)

The developer types a list of files and stores the list in a System/38 source member. (2) The operator asks a PC program to copy the list of files to the PC disk or diskette. The operator may

specify a date, and only files changed after that date

are copied to the PC. (3) The PC runs a System/38 program to copy all the

files in the list from the System/38 virtual diskette. (4) The PC program prints all the errors and warnings found during the copy. (5) The PC program copies all the files from virtual

diskette to the real diskette. (6) The PC program copies all the files from real diskette to disk if the operator requested a disk copy

in Step (2). The list of files may be typed on any System/38 workstation a PC is not needed to type the list. Many files can be copied without operator action for each file, and several copy requests may be queued and run without operator intervention. For each file in the list the developer may specify: - PC file name and e...
