Abstract

A technique is described whereby a tray assembly is designed in such a manner as to provide for mechanical interchangeability of devices, such as computer magnetic data files, floppy disk drives, etc. The tray is unique in that three positions are provided so that it is possible to mount various configurations of devices, such as two floppy disk drives and one fixed disk drive or one floppy disk drive or two fixed disk drives, using a tray for each device when mounted in the computer housing. The design is made flexible so as to provide for customer installation as well as factory installation.

A technique is described whereby a tray assembly is designed in such a manner as to provide for mechanical interchangeability of devices, such as computer magnetic data files, floppy disk drives, etc. The tray is unique in that three positions are provided so that it is possible to mount various configurations of devices, such as two floppy disk drives and one fixed disk drive or one floppy disk drive or two fixed disk drives, using a tray for each device when mounted in the computer housing. The design is made flexible so as to provide for customer installation as well as factory installation.

The tray assembly is designed so as to constrain lateral (horizontal) motion of the assembly so as to prevent damage to the devices during shipment of the machine. Tray assembly 10, as shown in the drawing, is designed to hold device 11 with screws 12, which pass through flexible tabs 13. Tabs 13 are used to compensate for differences in dimensional tolerances between holes in the tray and the device. Slotted area 14 is provided for subsequent connection of cable 15 with its edge connector 16 to circuit card 17 mounted in device 11. The design provides for multiple cable connections, as required. Slots are provided at the lower surface of the tray for cooling device 11. Also included as part of tray 10 are two outward facing tabs 18 and 19, two inward facing tabs 20 and 21, and at its opposite end are two bifurcated tabs consisting of upper portions 22 and 23 and lower portions 24 and 25.
