Abstract

A method is described for use in a word processor to allow a graph to be joined at print time, insuring that the graph fits on a single page, and begins on a line with no other text characters, and represent the position of the graph in the document by a box while the document is being revised. Some word processing programs allow a graph to be joined at print time, but require the user to insure the graph is correctly positioned so as to print on a single page. The position of the box cannot be viewed while the document is being edited. In accordance with the new method an instruction to join a graph is represented by two separate controls in a word processor with an L3-like datastream. 1. A Begin Graph single-byte control. 2.

Method for Joining a Graph and Text in a Document at Print Time

A method is described for use in a word processor to allow a graph to be joined at print time, insuring that the graph fits on a single page, and begins on a line with no other text characters, and represent the position of the graph in the document by a box while the document is being revised. Some word processing programs allow a graph to be joined at print time, but require the user to insure the graph is correctly positioned so as to print on a single page. The position of the box cannot be viewed while the document is being edited. In accordance with the new method an instruction to join a graph is represented by two separate controls in a word processor with an L3-like datastream. 1. A Begin Graph single-byte control. 2.

A Join Graph multi-byte control containing the name of the file for the graph, and

the size of the graph. For this control to be

inserted, the program must be able to access the

graph file and determine the size of the graph in

columns and lines. This allows for the graph to

be represented on the display by a box while the

document is being edited. It also relieves the

program of having to reaccess the graph file to

redetermine the size each time the document is

edited. The Begin Graph control and Join Graph control are externalized to the user as a single entity spanning multiple lines. They are always kept next to each other in the datastream using the following rules: When t...
