Abstract

This article describes a calibration-type tool developed to accurately determine the nominal diameter of rotary brushes employed when cleaning debris from ceramic green sheets. The exact size of such brushes must be known in order to properly locate them in the brush cleaning fixture. The disclosed tool is shown in above. It consists of a base plate 1, two pedestals 2 and 3, a measuring bar 8 with linear bearings 4, two indicators 7, and a set-up tool 9 which simulates the actual diameter of the brushes to be measured. The following procedure is used with the tool illustrated: The set-up tool 9, which measures 2.000 inches in diameter, is first mounted between the two pedestals 2 and 3, with the measuring bar 8 resting on the ends.

The following procedure is used with the tool illustrated: The set-up tool 9, which measures 2.000 inches in diameter, is first mounted between the two pedestals 2 and 3, with the measuring bar 8 resting on the ends. Collar stops 6 are set above the linear bearings 4 to protect the indicators 7 from possible damage. The indicators are then set at zero, and should not deviate from that setting throughout rotation of the set-up tool. The set-up tool is then removed and a test brush inserted in its place. The indicators will now read + or - during brush rotation, depending upon the difference found between the set-up tool and the brush under test. Rotation of the brush will serve to indicate uniformity in diameter. In contrast to shadow viewing, which requires the use of a large and expensive piece of equipment plus some kind of holding fixture, the disclosed brush measuring tool can be easily used by maintenance personnel.
