Abstract

A method is described to permit the analysis of system hardware failures to be logged and effectively communicated to the unsophisticated user, sophisticated user, and to the Service organizations. Many systems perform error analysis functions of hardware errors. Hardware error logging is the gathering of data (bits and bytes) about a realtime system failure during realtime by the failing system. This data is stored on a nonvolatile media. Error Log Analysis is a procedure or set of programs that helps interpret the nature of the failure and possible cause and might specify some action to be performed. If an error is detected many systems will log the raw bits and bytes which are captured at the time of the error. They will provide a means to display this error record. They may perform some analysis on that error record.

Error Log Analysis is a procedure or set of programs that helps interpret the nature of the failure and possible cause and might specify some action to be performed. If an error is detected many systems will log the raw bits and bytes which are captured at the time of the error. They will provide a means to display this error record. They may perform some analysis on that error record. The new method supplies complete text messages that were fabricated from partial text descriptions, but when displayed, give complete messages stating the nature of the failure and what was suspect. This supports the user community, but the service organizations need a Service Request Number. This is a group of numbers that represent the failing box (display, printer, system unit), the failing part (disk adapter, async card, etc.) or both. In accordance with the new method, the Hardware Error Log Analysis record contains Description ID Numbers and Service Request Numbers.
