Abstract

A generalized procedure is described to create update diskettes for distribution to customers. The procedure provides for 1) changed target files for multiple Licensed Program Products (LPPs) to be identified by an automated procedure; 2) changed target files to be ordered in a meaningful way; 3) required control information for any collection of changed target files to be generated; and 4) these files to be dumped in a desired sequence to general distribution media. An update can encompass one or more LPPs, and may contain any number of changed target files. Each software developer is aware only of changes to his/her own LPP. Conversely, the centralized authority that generates update diskettes can determine which LPPs are to be included in an update, but is unaware of the specific information required for each included LPP.

Method for Creation of a Control Software Update Application on General Distribution Media

A generalized procedure is described to create update diskettes for distribution to customers. The procedure provides for 1) changed target files for multiple Licensed Program Products (LPPs) to be identified by an automated procedure;
2) changed target files to be ordered in a meaningful way; 3) required control information for any collection of changed target files to be generated; and 4) these files to be dumped in a desired sequence to general distribution media. Therefore, the creation of an update diskette requires a generalized procedure that can collect the specific update information associated with each updated LPP, merge it with the specific update information of all other LPPs included in the update, and then structure this information, together with the changed target files, in a way that is compatible with the system that maintains the user's files. In accordance with the new procedure, centralized authority creates a file structure that contains a directory for each update to each LPP, plus one direc...
