Abstract

An improved ribbon guide which serves to guide the ribbon in front of the printhead as well as hold the paper firmly against the platen is disclosed. Prior-art ribbon guides are thin sheets of plastic or metal having an aperture through which the characters are printed. By using an apertured guide, the thickness of the guide and the need to avoid ink smudging requires that the printhead, ribbon, and guide assembly be spaced from the paper by a minimum amount. By using the guide of this disclosure, printhead-to-paper spacing 31, shown in Fig. 1, can be reduced. Printhead 11 is mounted on a carrier (not shown) for transverse movement while printing a line of print. Ribbon guide 13 is mounted, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, on printhead 11 for movement therewith.

Printhead 11 is mounted on a carrier (not shown) for transverse movement while printing a line of print. Ribbon guide 13 is mounted, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, on printhead 11 for movement therewith. Ribbon guide 13 includes guide posts 15, 17, 19 and 21 to guide ribbon 23 across the front or working face of the printhead 11. Guide 13 has surfaces 25 and 27 which press against the paper being printed to hold the paper against the platen 20 so that the paper does not contact ribbon 23. The opportunity for contact of the paper by the ribbon is greater near the fold in fanfold paper. The edges of surfaces 25 and 27 are beveled to guide the folds of fanfold paper away from the ribbon and to assist in inserting cut forms for printing.
