Abstract

It is known in chromatography to use vials for providing small amounts of a sample fluid to be analyzed by the chromatograph. A new type of vial is described herein. A disposable, screw-top, one-piece vial (microvial) is shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The vial is used, for example, in the liquid chromatography field in which small amounts of expensive or rare fluid samples are to be used for analysis. The vial includes threaded top portion 2, tapered interior portion 4 and ribbed exterior portion 6. The threaded top portion is adapted to receive a screw-top cap and (variable thickness) septum in order to eliminate leakage and minimize evaporation of the fluid in the vial. The tapered interior portion provides a cavity for containing low fluid volumes, but which facilitates access to all of the fluid by a syringe.

The vial is used, for example, in the liquid chromatography field in which small amounts of expensive or rare fluid samples are to be used for analysis. The vial includes threaded top portion 2, tapered interior portion 4 and ribbed exterior portion 6. The threaded top portion is adapted to receive a screw- top cap and (variable thickness) septum in order to eliminate leakage and minimize evaporation of the fluid in the vial. The tapered interior portion provides a cavity for containing low fluid volumes, but which facilitates access to all of the fluid by a syringe. The ribbed exterior portion facilitates filling and overall handling of the vial. The one-piece vial is used in the liquid chromatograph (LC 9505) automatic sample handler made by IBM, but it is capable of being used with any liquid chromatograph sample handler on the market. The one- piece vial has a fluid capacity of 300 microliters and can be made of substantially any organic synthetic material, such as polypropylene, that is inert to most liquid chromatograph solvents.
