Abstract

A method is described to provide Select Lines which are messages that are displayed at the bottom of a menu box or on a line of the screen while in the text typing frame of a text processing program. The message contains information about the functions that are available while the menu is displayed or while the operator is in the text typing frame. The fields on the select line must be video reversed when the operator presses the corresponding key or points to the field with the mouse cursor. The Select Line code needs a way to correlate the operator action with the specific field on the screen and know where the field is located.

Static Message Descriptors to Support Select Lines

A method is described to provide Select Lines which are messages that are displayed at the bottom of a menu box or on a line of the screen while in the text typing frame of a text processing program. The message contains information about the functions that are available while the menu is displayed or while the operator is in the text typing frame. The fields on the select line must be video reversed when the operator presses the corresponding key or points to the field with the mouse cursor. The Select Line code needs a way to correlate the operator action with the specific field on the screen and know where the field is located. There must be a way for the application to know where the field is that the operator selected so that pull-down menus can be aligned properly and a way to determine what mouse rules correspond to the field. Does it result in a pull-down menu or a function being performed? Since the select lines must be translated, the fields will start and end in different columns depending on the language. The definition must be flexible. In accordance with the new method, a data structure called a Static Message Descriptor (SMD) was created. This data structure is stored in the offline message/menu file along with the text of the Select Line message. The information that is stored in the data structure includes: correlation key, mouse zones, and field type. The correlation key defines which key the op...
