Abstract

With color thermal transfer ribbon having two dye layers in resistive ribbon thermal transfer printing, color printing can be accomplished by expensive modification of the printing machine or by modifying the printing ribbon. A preferred way to modify the ribbon is shown in the figure, where the ribbon 10 includes a resistive layer 12, a metal (such as aluminum) current return layer 14, and inner dye layer 16, and outer dye layer 18. Dye layer 16 is a sublimable dye having a high temperature range (150-200ŒC) of sublimation. This layer is prepared by solution coating on the aluminum layer 14, and consists of a dye in a binder. Outer dye layer 18 is prepared by lamination of FUJI thermal transfer ink having a lower (60-80ŒC) temperature range of transfer.

A resistive layer 12 can be a conventional resistive layer, such as a carbon-loaded polycarbonate. On application of a heat pulse, the dyes used in inner layer 16 must sublime, rather than melt. In this manner, two different colors can be obtained with different print currents. An example of a dye that can be used in inner layer 16 is a MOBAY dye. The binder for this dye can be polycarbonate, rubber, or cellulose acetate propionate. Organic solvents, such as methylene chloride, tetrahydrofuran, and ethyl acetate, can be used.
