Abstract

Window images can be displayed in a word processing program, to explain various commands and controls and to provide help messages, by storing the text and commands controlling the display of that text for the windows, in document form which can be called by the program. Fig. 1 illustrates a window image for a "controls" explanation. The source of the text for the image displayed in Fig. 1 can be a series of commands and text stored in document form in files accessible by the word processing program. Fig. 2 illustrates an example of the text and commands stored in document form necessary to create the image of Fig. 1. The document file storing the commands of Fig. 2 can be accessed by the program issuing the "CONTROL1 M," which is the label name for the source text of Fig. 2. The document file storing the commands of Fig. 2 can be accessed by the program issuing the "CONTROL1 M," which is the label name for the source text of Fig. 2. The source text for the window of Fig. 1 begins with the label control [LBL: CONTROL1 M]. This label control marks the beginning of the panel text for the window image of Fig. 1. As can be seen in Fig. 2, the second line begins with the control [BES] which shows the beginning of a block of text that will be emphasized when it is printed on the display. The end of the second line has two controls, the first is [EES] which shows the end of a block of text that will be emphasized when it is printed. Thus the phrase "Controls (Instruction)" will be displayed on the monitor in emphasized form.
