Abstract

A mechanism is described which crimps paper from a continuous roll at designated positions to prepare paper in a continuous folded form. Significant cost savings over using standard fanfold paper can be effected in fanfold printers. Mechanism 10 (Fig. 1) consists of three sets of sprocket feed rolls 11, 12 and 13, each independently driven, which drive roll paper provided with edge holes. Paper guides 14, 15 and 16 hold the paper against the sprocket feed rolls to maintain engagement of the feed pins in the paper. The paper guides are hinged to allow the loading of paper. The paper is guided through the mechanism by guides 17 and 18 and center guide 19. Two sets of folder rolls, lower set 20 and upper set 21, are disposed opposite inner guides 17 and 18 facing the paper. Each roll of roll sets 20 and 21 rotates simultaneously and in opposing directions. The paper jumbo roll which is perforated by the vendor at predesignated positions is fed into mechanism 10 into sprocket feed rolls 11, 12 and 13. The operating sequence for crimping is illustrated in Fig. 2. Feed rolls 12 and 13 are stopped, and the paper is driven by feed roll 11, causing a bubble 22 in the paper to develop between the rolls of feeder roll set 20. The paper feed is then stopped while the folder roll set 20 is activated, thereby creating a crimp 23 in the paper at the perforation.
