Abstract

This article describes a data base merger and analyzer program to create mailing labels and run analyses of educational courses. It may be used and maintained by non-DP professionals having minimal technical knowledge of programming. The data base system, termed Alumni, comprises a set of IBM Conversational Management System (CMS) execs written in the REXX language and stored on a disk (I disk). Alumni is a data base constructed using the IBM SQL program. It is read and updated using SQL commands. A description of the execs follows. LCG EXEC I -- The process to produce a mailing label file is initiated by typing "LCG" which executes the LCG EXEC I exec, used to build the Las Colinas (LC) master data file on a temporary disk (G).

DATA BASE Merger and Analyzer

This article describes a data base merger and analyzer program to create mailing labels and run analyses of educational courses. It may be used and maintained by non-DP professionals having minimal technical knowledge of programming. The data base system, termed Alumni, comprises a set of IBM Conversational Management System (CMS) execs written in the REXX language and stored on a disk (I disk).

Alumni is a data base constructed using the IBM SQL program. It is read and updated using SQL commands. A description of the execs follows. LCG EXEC I -- The process to produce a mailing label file is initiated by typing "LCG" which executes the LCG EXEC I exec, used to build the Las Colinas (LC) master data file on a temporary disk
(G). LCG first presents the following menu: HEADQUARTERS REPORTS FROM THE ALUMNI DATA BASE PLACE AN X BESIDE THE DESIRED OPTIONS AND PRESS ENTER:

The explanation of the various options follows: Upon request to combine the Las Colinas files, the LC EXEC I exec is initiated which links the user to the Los Colinas Alumni disk as the Z disk, a temporary disk. The desired files are appended, one by one, to create a file called LC STUDENTS G on the temporary disk. Similarly, upon request to combine the New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and/or Dallas files, the appropriate Z disk is linked in each case by initiating execs named NY, LA, CH, and/or DA. The desired files from each Alumni disk are appended, one by one, to form NY STUDENTS G, LA STUDENTS G, CH STUDENTS G, and/or DA STUDENTS G. Upon request for truncation, each of the files created above is truncated from its original LRECL of 550 to an LRECL of 300. This speeds later processing. Upon request to combine all files, the STUDENTS files NY, LA, CH, and/or DA are appended to LC STUDENTS G. This resulting LC STUDENTS G file now contains all the records of all alumni data base files desired. Upon request to sort the master file, SORTV is invoked to sort LC STUDENTS G by zip code, last name and first name. The resulting file replaces L...
