Abstract

The early document gap error detection system includes an additional detector 11, 12 associated with each document separator 10 to determine if successive documents (bank notes) are adequately spaced before they reach a multiple document detector farther downstream on the main drive. (Image Omitted) Referring to the document feed mechanism in Fig. 1, the main drive belt 1 is driven in the direction of arrow A in conjunction with several rollers 2 which define the document pathway between the stored documents 3 and the escrow pocket 4. The documents are stored in a separator which includes a restraint roll 6 and a picker roll 7. The picker roll is driven by a clutch and feeds documents onto the restraint roll 6. The counter-rotation of rolls 6 and 7 separates the documents, and picker roll 7 feeds them onto main drive belt 1.

Referring to the document feed mechanism in Fig. 1, the main drive belt 1 is driven in the direction of arrow A in conjunction with several rollers 2 which define the document pathway between the stored documents 3 and the escrow pocket

A multiple document detector (MDD) 5 determines whether this pathway includes overlapped documents, long documents, or short documents. Each document separator 10 has an associated feed sensor consisting of a light source 11, such as a light-emitting diode, and a photodetector 12. The light-emitting diode and photodetector are placed on opposite sides of the document path and provide a signal reflecting whether or not a document is present.
