Abstract

A rail system provides a reliable, automatable and low cost method of plugging small feature cards into electronic subassemblies without the use of fasteners. The rail 1 is a one-piece injection molded element which includes elongated side bars 2 held firmly against the printed circuit card 3 in the assembled position. A standard edge connector 6 is affixed to card 3. When the rail is secured to card 3, vertical sections 7 are forced into slots 8 in the edge of card 3. At the same time, flexible snaps 4 are forced outwardly around tabs 5 on connector 6 and snap into place behind the tabs to secure the rail against withdrawal.

At the same time, flexible snaps 4 are forced outwardly around tabs 5 on connector 6 and snap into place behind the tabs to secure the rail against withdrawal. Alignment pins (not shown) at the connector end of rail 1 are forced into holes (not shown) to accurately position the rail relative to the edge connector, thereby assuring high connection reliability with minimum tolerance buildup problems. Slots 12 in the side bars 2 provide simplified, accurate mounting of a feature card.
