Abstract

The article describes a wiring assembly that attaches multi-access units, such as the IBM 8228 multi-access unit (MAU), to a ring-type local area network. The wiring assembly is a multi-port device with each port being an hermaphroditic terminal connector, such as the connector shown in U.S. Patent 4,501,459, interconnected by single pair signal-carrying cables. Fig. 1 shows a schematic of the assembly having connectors 10, 12 and 14. Each connector has terminals 1, 2, 3 and 4. The connectors are interconnected by cable length 16, 18 and 20. Each cable length has a pair of signal-carrying conductors that are connected to respective terminals within the conductor. Arrows show the direction of signal travel within the assembly. Connectors 10 and 14 connect the wiring assembly to the ring-in and ring-out portion of the ring.

Each of the wiring assemblies has a ring-in (RI) port, a ring-out (RO) port, and a stubbed (S) port. The stubbed port is used for attaching the multi-access unit to the ring.
