Abstract

In DisplayWrite 4, the capability is added for the user to specify both a specific sequence of data to be sent to the printer at each job initialization as well as a file name, where all data within the file is copied to the printer. This specification takes place within a Printer Function Table (PFT), which the user assigns to each attached printer. This file is sent at the beginning of every job, where a job may consist of printing up to 99 copies of the same document. When the job is completed, a reset sequence is sent to the printer, which is intended to restore the printer to its normal defaults in order to let other applications run. The major benefit of clearing out the printer after each job is found in a printer-sharing environment such as that normally found by users of the IBM 3812 page printer.

Method to Download External File to Printer at Job Initialization

Because a switch may occur between jobs, it is not sufficient to simply send the initialization file on a session basis. A description of "Download of external files through PFT initialization function" is as follows: As part of the initialization function of a document to a specific printer, the user specifies the printer number and a corresponding table is accessed. The table may optionally contain a fixed initialization sequence as well as the name of a file. The file name may be up to 44 characters in length. If the user qualifies the name using a path or drive specification, then the name mu...
