Abstract

A method is described to permit DisplayWrite to print using the Landscape capability of the IBM 3812, page printer or any other page printer. There is no explicit technique for the user to specify that the printed output should be printed on its side (Landscape mode). Also, there is no explicit option in the data stream to capture the user's intent that a page print on its side. One approach (available in DisplayWrite 3) is that the user could create a table where a specific drawer selection, which can be captured in the specific page format, represents a switch to landscape mode. This approach does not capture the user's intent in the data stream and may cause incorrect results on interchange. Also available with the IBM 3812 page printer driver is the capability to specify the landscape function on a document basis.

Method for Providing Landscape Support in a Text Processing Program

In accordance with the new technique, a new printer table menu was created which allows the user to define the selected support for the landscape mode as a function of each drawer. If the landscape support is available on a specific drawer, as specified in the printer function table, then the system will use the landscape option whenever the page length is such that the width is longer than the height. Thus, the support is on a page boundary and not on the normal document boundary. The advantages of this approach are that there is no change to the internal data stream (L3P) or to th...
