Abstract

An optical fiber scoring tool has a stationary part that receives the connector of a fiber optic cable with the optical fiber extending vertically downward from the connector. A motor driven turn table is located below the fiber. The motor and turn table are slidable horizontally between a starting position on the left and the scoring position on the right. A push button switch starts the motor and a holding-in switch keeps the motor energized for one complete rotation for scoring the fiber. The turn table carries a knife and at the start of a scoring operation, the turn table is moved to the right to bring the knife into contact with the fiber. As the table is rotated, the knife is moved in a horizontal plane about the fiber to form the score.

As the table is rotated, the knife is moved in a horizontal plane about the fiber to form the score. At the end of the rotation, the knife is to the left of the fiber and the turn table is returned to its left most position to the left of the fiber axis.

The combination of the left to right motion and rotary motion is provided by a cam that is formed on the rim of the turn table. An idler roller is located in a fixed position to the left of the axis of the motor and turn table and rides on the rim of the turn table. The turn table rim is shaped to move the motor and turn table to the right and suitable means is provided to urge the table and motor assembly to the left against the idler roller.
