Abstract

Minimizing down time of a cell in an automated production line an important design consideration. The problem is particularly complex in cells consisting of a rotary table where multiple work-stations perform a variety of tasks. Inclusion of redundant stand-by work-stations in the rotary table is expensive, and may decrease throughput, as all stations must be cycled through. The present embodiment alleviates this problem by providing a duplicate work-station only for the major task performed in the cell.

Minimizing down time of a cell in an automated production line an important design consideration. The problem is particularly complex in cells consisting of a rotary table where multiple work-stations perform a variety of tasks. Inclusion of redundant stand-by work-stations in the rotary table is expensive, and may decrease throughput, as all stations must be cycled through. The present embodiment alleviates this problem by providing a duplicate work-station only for the major task performed in the cell.

In the present embodiment the principal task performed, in a rotary table cell, is a machining operation. Other less critical tasks such as deburring and inspection are also performed. These secondary tasks can be handled manually for the short time required to repair or replace an inoperative part in one of these relatively simple work-stations. However, the complicated and precise machining task cannot be off-loaded. Furthermore, the principal work-station is usually a complex machine which can require considerable diagnostic and repair time. Therefore, a duplicate machining station is included in the rotary table. The two stations are successive, with the first performing a rough cut, and the second performing the final cut.
