Abstract

It is desirable to avoid excessive friction between the surfac of magnetic tape in a tape drive and parts of the drive or between adjacent layers of the tape. Friction can be substantiall reduced by roughening at least one of the tape surfaces. Ablating the surface with a laser can be used to obtain a roughened surface. The back surface of a magnetic material coated tape, for instance, can be textured by laser ablative photodecomposition.
