Abstract

A force transducer is designed to provide a means of measuring the spring pin force of electrical connectors. Through the use of a piezoelectric ceramic plate sensor, a charge signal is generated which is directly proportional to the force applied. The charge signal is then converted to the force reading to complete the force transducer application.

Force Transducer for Spring Loaded Electrical Connectors

A force transducer is designed to provide a means of measuring the spring pin force of electrical connectors. Through the use of a piezoelectric ceramic plate sensor, a charge signal is generated which is directly proportional to the force applied. The charge signal is then converted to the force reading to complete the force transducer application.

A typical electrical connector must provide, from its spring contact pins, sufficient force at the electrical contact tabs to complete an electrical circuit. This technique provides a force transducer to measure that force accurately.

The force transducer for spring loaded electrical connectors is inserted, in place of a circuit card, at an individual pin location. It consists of piezoelectric plate 10, as shown in the figure, sandwiched between two conductors 11, mounted on circuit card material 12. It forms an electrical transducer circuit for insertion into mating spring contact tabs 13 of the connector. Measurements are made between the tabs using piezoelectric technology which converts the electrical energy into force. The polling direction is in the direction shown, so as to produce the best signal measurement of the contact spring force. The surface condition of the mating tabs 13 and dimensions are maintained the same as those of a real circuit card.
