Injection Molding of a Hot Roll

The optical reflectivity of the liquid-like elastomer being injected into a mold cavity is monitored in order to determine if the mix proportions of the liquid are proper.

When a shipment of this product is received from the manufac- turer, a small amount is mixed in the desired proportion, and an optical reflectivity reading is taken. This reading is recorded, and will be used as a reference when this particular shipment is later used for molding.

During such later use, as the mixture is injected into the mold cavity, a small test quantity of the mixture is bled off at the location of the mold inlet. An optical reflectivity reading is taken from this test quantity. If the reflectivity reading does not substantially match the reference reading, the production molding process is stopped, and the process is checked to determine the cause of the problem. An exemplary cause of such a problem is the uneven wearing of the injection pumps for the components' elastomers A and B.
