Dynamic Tension Measurement System

The tension of a frame mounted membrane can be determined by a system which measures the tension in the following manner.

As seen in the drawing, a membrane 1 is mounted on a frame 2. The membrane is exited by a selected driver, e.g., a turbulent air stream or a speaker. The vibration of the membrane is measured by either a microphone or by a fiber-optic probe which relays the signal to a signal analyzer. A signal analyzer capable of performing fourier transformations is used to determine the resonance frequency of the lowest mode of vibration of the membrane. Assuming the mass density remains constant, the membrane tension is proportional to the square of the resonance frequency.

The frame is clamped at three points to eliminate frame motion.
