Abstract

Present Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) chambers present to the receiver reflected as well as direct electromagnetic (EM) radiation from the source transmitter being examined because of the reflections off the walls of the chamber. A properly designed parabolic chamber will reflect source EM emanations such that it would bypass the receiver and only the direct radiation from the source will be gathered and/or received by the pick up receiver.

Present Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) chambers present to the receiver reflected as well as direct electromagnetic (EM) radiation from the source transmitter being examined because of the reflections off the walls of the chamber. A properly designed parabolic chamber will reflect source EM emanations such that it would bypass the receiver and only the direct radiation from the source will be gathered and/or received by the pick up receiver.

Fig. 1 shows a parabolic EMC measurement chamber with its open end pointing out to space and/or pointing toward a quiet EM environment. The object radiation source (transmitter) which is to be measured is placed at the focus of the parabola and the receiver is placed on the center line of the parabola so as to receive only the direct radiation from the source. By using this configuration and placement of the transmitter and receiver, the receiver will receive no reflected radiation from the walls of the chamber provided that the opening of the parabola is no less than one wave length of the lowest frequency of interest.
