Method for Determining Actual ID and OD Calibration of Head Drive Mechanisms on Disk Drive Assemblies

Head 2 is caused to traverse in its usual path across magnetic disk 4 which has been previously marked with a magic marker so as to mark the ID path 6 and the OD path 8 thus delineating the recording area 10 on disk 4.

Disk 4 is a scrap disk and is marked using a magic marker to provide a radial mark 12 on disk 4. The marked scrap disk 4 is then placed on the drive spindle 14 of a conventional disk drive 16, and head 2 is caused to traverse across disk 4 using the head drive mechanism of disk drive 16 as spindle 14 is turned at its usual speed. The head 2 is loaded on disk 4 in the usual manner when traversing across disk 4, and head 2 creates distinct rail marks at ID path 6 and OD path 8. These marks are then measured to give the actual ID and OD of recording area 10.
