Abstract

Totes for workpieces in an automated production line have a common base and individualized inserts. Fig 1 shows common base 1 fitted with insert 2. Base 1 is provided with four holes 3 engaged by shot pins in the work station to assure precise location. The interior 4 of each insert 2 is designed with pockets of different sizes and shapes to hold specific parts, sub-assemblies or workpieces. These pockets are designed so that workpieces or assemblies fit only one way, and are accurately located with respect to shot pin holes 3 assuring positioning repeatability of workpieces. Supports 5 are provided to prevent sagging of insert 2. Insert 2 is riveted to base 1 at several points 6.

Supports 5 are provided to prevent sagging of insert
2. Insert 2 is riveted to base 1 at several points 6.

To reduce the number of different tote types required, insert 2 may be designed to accommodate more than one type of part. Figs 2 and 3 show that the same insert 2 handles both sub-assembly #3 and sub-assembly #4. It is apparent that worn or damaged inserts are readily replaced.
