Disposable Paper Shield Integral With Ribbon Cartridge Assembly

A paper shield 10 shown in the Figure is removably attached to a ribbon cartridge assembly 20 and is dispensable with the cartridge. The paper shield is made of a lightweight, inexpensive material such as plastic and is flexibly fastened to the ribbon cartridge assembly.

Referring to the Figure, the paper shield is a thin elongated strip 11 with a slot 12 (shown in dotted lines) extending diagonally across the central portion of the strip. The slot is sized to permit printing elements to pass through the slot and strike the ribbon onto the paper. The slot is rounded at the ends 13 in order to provide reduction in the stress concentrations of the body which might otherwise occur. The slot is inclined at an angle to correspond to the inclination of the ribbon cartridge assembly. By matching the inclinations, the slot will be parallel to the platen and print band during printing, and a larger area of ribbon will be hit by the printing elements than if they were not inclined.

The paper shield is mounted to the ribbon cartridge assembly with a pair of mounting brackets 21. Each mounting bracket defines a slot 22 for receiving the opposite ends of the paper shield and positioning it parallel to and outside of the ribbon 30. Each bracket is mounted to the ribbon cartridge assembly with a pivot snap 23 that attaches to an upstanding post 24 on each cartridge arm. Tension is provided to the shield by a tensio...
