Abstract

This article describes a technique for further reducing the chance that a single UPC (Universal Product Council) label on an item will be falsely detected as identical labels on two separate items. A current protection technique "time stamps" each complete label that is decoded. Successive identical labels are assumed to be on the same grocery item unless the more recent label is detected after a lockout time has elapsed. The lockout time begins when the earlier of the two successive labels is last detected. The protection afforded by this technique is enhanced for version A and EAN-13 bar code labels by requiring that only the right half of such a label match the right half of a previously decoded label before the time stamp is updated.

The article also describes an algorithm for reducing an asymmetry which would otherwise occur when a version A or EAN-13 label is scanned by a vertical scan line.

More specifically, once a complete label has been detected and decoded, the system will look either for identical complete labels or for right halves of labels which match the right half of the previously decoded full label. If successive, identical right halves are detected, the time stamp for the detected label is normally updated to delay the initiation of the lockout time interval.
