Porosity determinations of gold plating can be made with improved accuracy and convenience by using a thin transparent tank to contain the electrodes, specimen and electrolyte.

In the figure, a pair of optically flat glass sheets 1 are separated by acrylic strips 2 at the ends and bottom and sealed with epoxy 3 to form a narrow tank. The assembly is supported in a groove 4 in base 5, e.g., aluminum. The tank can be fitted with a suitable cathode, e.g., gold wire 6, and filled with a combined gel and reagent into which the anode specimen is immersed.

The narrow tank with optical quality glass panels enables easy examination of the specimen for pore sites from either side and at close range.
