Pre-slot Slider Fabrication And Measurement Process

An air bearing slider is fabricated by combined machining and etching process to provide the desired slider configuration.

An air bearing slider of the type which has side rails and a recessed area between the rails is fabricated by first removing material in the area between the rails by a grinding operation. An etching operation is then used to produce the desired rail configuration. During the measurement process, a mask is used to cover the unwanted areas of the slider so that reflection from the previously machined surfaces does not impact the accuracy of the measurements of slider rail flatness and other design features.

This method reduces fabrication and etch time.
