Multifunction Disk Carrier

Illustrated in the figure is a disk transfer gripper for robots which will allow two disks to be picked up by the inner diameter (ID) for transferring along with their cassette container.

The device includes two vacuum disk pickup locations and a forked portion for handling the cassette container. Disks are picked up at positions 1 and 2. At each of the pickup positions 1 and 2, a disk 3 is aligned by having its outer edge abut a lip 4 and is retained by vacuum applied though a groove 5 which adjoins the disk inner diameter. The portions of the tool that contact the disk are formed of a plastic material selected to prevent damage to the disk.

The other function of the device is to pickup the container for the disk using forks 7 that engage and support the container at the outside rim. This permits pickup and placement of the container at its work location.
