A method is described for producing a taper of a selected angle and extent for parts such as air bearing slider rails by an ion milling operation at an oblique angle.

The edge blending process comprises the steps of forming the rails by any suitable process, tilting the slider at an oblique angle (25 degrees with respect to the direction of the beam, for example) with respect to an ion milling beam, and etching the slider for a predetermined time so that a controlled taper is produced on the edge of the rails of the slider. The specific angle and time can be varied to produce different taper profiles.
