Abstract

The original DisplayWrite 3 Printer Description Table (PDT) format did not allow for selection of a group of typestyles as a function of the typestyle number. Also, there was no provision to allow more than one instance of a variable n in any control sequence definition. A user worked around the PDT limitation by creating new tables or modifying the shipped tables. Each typestyle supported for the IBM 3812 was put into its own separate group. Up to 26 groups and a default typestyle was allowed per table. Simply increasing the number of groups would alleviate the problem but had the disadvantage of increasing the size drastically. In order to better support the IBM 3812 page printer, the typestyle number was made a variable or variables in the typestyle selection sequence, and the typestyle reset sequence.

Method to Provide Selection of a Group of Typestyles As a Function of Typestyle Number

Also, in order to provide for other printers, the selection sequence also supports the font width parameter. There is an architected ASCII control "select font" which has as parameters both the font identification number (typestyle number) and the font width. This architecture is being extended to support typographical fonts. In accordance with the new method, the table format is updated to support a variable number of descriptors in the typestyle section.

After the typestyle list, which was in the DisplayWrite 3 PDT format, the following is added: # bytes Description
