Abstract

A vertical row of print wires 10, driven by individual actuators (not shown), are guided adjacent a printing region 11 by guide plate 12. Plate 12 is displaceable by small increments in the X direction by electrical deformation of a pair of piezoelectric bending elements 13, 14, and is displaceable by small increments in the Y direction by a pair of electrically controllable piezoelectric bending elements 15, 16. Printing is accomplished by positioning a printhead-carrying plate 12 with respect to paper 17 and executing a series of print operations with wires 10, displacing plate 12 by activation of the piezoelectric elements 13, 14, 15, 16 between print operations. After the series of print operations is complete, the printhead-carrying plate 12 is displaced laterally and another series of print operations is performed.
