ABSTRACT

This battery is a single cell-pack that uses the multi-cell bq2060 fuel gauge. This particular multi-cell fuel gauge was used because it is able to support commands for the smart battery data specification v1.1 (SBS).  The bq2060 is normally used for multi-cell and high side configuration applications.  This circuit uses the bq2060 in an unconventional way, as there is only one cell in the pack. The design also uses the bq2060 in a low-side configuration rather than the preferred choice of a high-side configuration as mentioned above. The invention also includes a low-voltage detector which disables power to the fuel gauge when the cell voltage falls below ~2.9V. The low-voltage detector enables the bq2060 to function with a single cell, in that it ensures that the fuel gauge never reaches an undefined state. It also ensures that the light emitting diodes (LEDs) do not issue false fuel gauge readings. 

 


DESCRIPTION OF METHOD AND DEVICE

The bq2060 fuel gauge was used for a few different reasons as opposed to using a standard single cell fuel gauge.  As mentioned above, this multi-cell fuel gauge supports commands for the SBS.  Data available includes the battery’s remaining capacity, temperature, voltage, current and remaining run-time predictions.  The bq2060 provides LED drivers and a push button input to depict remaining battery capacity from full to empty with a five segment display.  A single cell fuel gauge did not offer these functions.
