Abstract

This article describes the design of a transport roll which can be used for moving various items across a flat surface, for example, a sheet of paper across the document glass of a copier machine. The roll is provided with grooves of which the number, width and depth are variable. The object is to provide a single component roll with a desired spring rate to minimize vibratory motion while retaining the desired functional coefficient and wear rate. In the figure, roll 10 has grooves 11 and 12 which add to the compliancy of the roll. As the roll bears against surface 13, roll surface 14 tends to pivot around point 15 and provides a cone roll effect.
