Abstract

In the present-day text or word processing environment, the operator often requires access to a host data processor through a low cost data link for data processing and records capability. An original solution to this problem was to utilize both a text processor and a separate data display terminal, such as the IBM 3278, which was compatible with the data processor. However, with the integration of data processing and text processing capability into an overall office systems environment, the field is advancing in the direction of utilizing the display terminal associated with the text processing system as an output terminal for the host data processor.

In the present-day text or word processing environment, the operator often requires access to a host data processor through a low cost data link for data processing and records capability. An original solution to this problem was to utilize both a text processor and a separate data display terminal, such as the IBM 3278, which was compatible with the data processor. However, with the integration of data processing and text processing capability into an overall office systems environment, the field is advancing in the direction of utilizing the display terminal associated with the text processing system as an output terminal for the host data processor. In such a system, operator interactive capability is provided for switching from a text processing session to a data processing session wherein the text processor emulates a data processing display terminal. In carrying out such a function, the text processor which is emulating the data processing display terminal must interface with the host processor through the host processor multiplexing and control unit system. The host processor control unit requires certain status information from the word processor that is emulating a data terminal. This information is returned as a response to a "round robin" poll.
