Abstract

In the present-day word processing environment, the operator often requires access to a host data processor through a low cost data link for data processing and records capability. An original solution to this problem was to utilize both a word processor and a separate data display terminal, such as the IBM 3278, which was compatible with the data processor. However, with the integration of data processing and word processing capability into an overall office systems environment, the field is advancing in the direction of utilizing the display terminal associated with the word processing system as an output terminal for the host data processor.

Enhanced Emulation of Data Processing Display Terminals in Word Processor System

In such a system, interactive capability is provided for switching from a word processing session to a data processing session wherein the word processor emulates a data processing display terminal. When operating at such a relatively unsophisticated data processing terminal, the more sophisticated word processing system display terminal has the capability of enhancing the functions of the data processing display. For example, with the word processor emulation of the data processing display terminal, it becomes relatively easy to enhance the data processing information to be displayed to a higher level language content which is more readily discernible by the operator than normal data processing output. In another example, an expedient is prov...
