Abstract

A simple technique is provided for improving low inductance chip capacitors. Variations in shrinkage of ceramic components during sintering is a major source of alignment error in subsequent processing. The proposed improvement takes advantage of the punch and die method of creating stacked capacitor plates 11, as shown in the figure. The punch and die may be modified to notch one edge of the green capacitor plates 12, to produce an alignment feature which will always be centered with respect to the internal electrode pattern 13. Registration with any subsequent masking operation is accomplished by placing the sintered capacitors on an adapter plate 14, which has precisely located alignment ridges 15.
