Abstract

In a cluster of word processing systems in which a number of terminals share common resources, such as hard files, the situation is often encountered in which multiple operators give different documents identical names. With the present document selection technique the system automatically distinguishes between multiple documents of identical names created by different operators by using the operator identifier code as a qualifier to be ANDed with the common document name to provide the common named document to the appropriate operator who created or is otherwise responsible for the document. When using this document selection technique one operator may wish to access documents for which other operators are responsible.

Document Selection in a Shared Resource Cluster

In a cluster of word processing systems in which a number of terminals share common resources, such as hard files, the situation is often encountered in which multiple operators give different documents identical names. With the present document selection technique the system automatically distinguishes between multiple documents of identical names created by different operators by using the operator identifier code as a qualifier to be ANDed with the common document name to provide the common named document to the appropriate operator who created or is otherwise responsible for the document. When using this document selection technique one operator may wish to access documents for which other operators are responsible. The technique allows the operator wishing to access other operators' documents the ability to qualify on the operator identifier codes of the other operators. A prior technique in selecting previously created documents for revision, output, or other tasks was that the operator had to remember and key the document name to access the document. With the present technique a list of available documents is displayed in a menu and the operator simply selects from the menu the document names and appropriate operator identification code. As a further qualifier a "Document Types" menu is provided to allow multiple documents of different types to have the same name. This provides an additional keystroke saving...
