Abstract

This is a method for monitoring and evaluating surface cleanliness. The apparatus used in performing the evaluation is in line with and provides a particle analysis of the cleaning bath fluid. In the past the standard method for measuring and counting particulate contamination on surfaces included removal of particulate in a cleaning bath, filtration of the cleaning fluid, and independent manual counting and sizing of the particles by microscopic analysis. The present method (Fig. 1) includes filling the cleaning tank 10 with the desired cleaning fluid. The cleaning fluid is then pumped by pump 11 through filter 20 to reduce the background count and returned to the cleaning tank 10 via particle counter 30 and flow meter 40.

The present method (Fig. 1) includes filling the cleaning tank 10 with the desired cleaning fluid. The cleaning fluid is then pumped by pump 11 through filter 20 to reduce the background count and returned to the cleaning tank 10 via particle counter 30 and flow meter 40. After this has been done, the filter 20 is bypassed, several background counts are taken, and the results are averaged. The cleaning fluid is then ultrasonically agitated for a fixed period of time. Ultrasonic agitation is stopped, several new background counts are taken, and the results are averaged. The steps of ultrasonic agitation and removal thereof and taking new background counts after the ultrasonic agitation are repeated so as to establish base line system characteristics.
