Abstract

This article relates to automated processes for stuffing continuous- loop, inked ribbons into cartridges and more particularly to means for threading a web into a clamping fixture. In order to prepare an inked ribbon for automated insertion into a cartridge, it must first be threaded through half a clamping fixture, through the cartridge, over a turning roller, and then through the second half of the clamping fixture. The ribbon is then held in the clamping fixture in an "X" pattern for subsequent welding and ironing smooth. A series of four angled clamps are actuated at proper times to hold the ribbon in the fixture until the weld/iron step is completed. A web is subjected to varying tensions as it is threaded through a torturous path, causing it to move out of a desired position.

A web is subjected to varying tensions as it is threaded through a torturous path, causing it to move out of a desired position. The web will always try to distribute the tension evenly over its cross section and, for this reason, it will always ride to the high (tight) side of a roller. Variations in tension will also cause the web to move. In order to insert the ribbon under the clamps, it is necessary to grasp it with fingers in the upper third of its width, as shown in Fig.
