Abstract

Fig. 1 shows a conceptual design for a HeNe laser detection scheme for determining whether or not the (16x) magnetic heads 8 of a magnetic recording disk file, shown in Fig. 2, will hit an edge of a disk 12 during the insertion phase of the assembly operation. It employs a basic HeNe laser 1 which emits a beam 2 into a beam splitter 3 that separates the beam 2 into (16x) laser beams that travel along precisely predetermined paths to a reflector detector 5. The actuator assembly 6 is then moved back and forth as shown (7), causing the magnetic heads 8 to pass into the vicinity of the laser beams 4 (Fig. 2).

Laser Scanning Head-Disk Interference Detector

2). Any head 9 and 10 which intersects the plane of interference 11 will interrupt the particular laser beam 4, thereby causing an output signal to abort the assembly operation and indicate to the operator which head 9 or heads 9 and 10 are at fault. It may also be used to test wires 13 or solder icicles which interfere.
