Abstract

It is desired that a plurality of text/graphics columns be vertically justified by a proportional distribution of white, or background, space to achieve a pleasing appearance. This is achieved through repetitive justification tries using a plurality of vertical spacing parameters. Shown are three columns to be vertically justified to a common depth. In a first iteration of vertical adjustments, a justification target indicated by the dashed line is selected based upon the various column depths and the space of the columns from the justification target without expansion or compression of the column-contained text or graphics.

Reiterative Vertical Justification of Columns

It is desired that a plurality of text/graphics columns be vertically justified by a proportional distribution of white, or background, space to achieve a pleasing appearance. This is achieved through repetitive justification tries using a plurality of vertical spacing parameters. Shown are three columns to be vertically justified to a common depth. In a first iteration of vertical adjustments, a justification target indicated by the dashed line is selected based upon the various column depths and the space of the columns from the justification target without expansion or compression of the column-contained text or graphics. For each iteration, this target is moved and the text redistributed among the three columns for achieving a minimal column depth for all of the columns which also correspond to a minimum justification adjustment for all of the columns. The proportional distribution and justification relate to the amount of remaining text depth to be justified after the text redistribution iterations, the total of adjustments available for a given column object, such as line space, skip space, text and lead-out, the amount of adjustment available for a particular or given column object, and the minimum vertical depth increment allowed for a given column object. Rather than merely adjust the right-most column (column 3), all of the columns are adjusted by expanding or compressing the text, skips, spaces and lead-out...
