Abstract

This article describes a glass tubing cutting tool which can make both longitudinal and concentric cuts in the tubing. The unit is designed to hold any size tubing and permits flanges, joints, broken ends, and the like to be removed easily while leaving a square cut end on the tubing so treated. The machine also serves as a tubing and rod cut-off tool which is adjustable to permit any length of tubing to be cut off with excellent repeatability and squareness, with a minimum of chipping of the glass. Basically, the machine 10 comprises an XY adjustable table 11 carrying on it a delta-shaped extension 12 which extends on both sides of the table 11 and has its major longitudinal axis at 90Πto the direction of the saw 16.

Glass or Quartz Tubing and Rod Guide

This article describes a glass tubing cutting tool which can make both longitudinal and concentric cuts in the tubing. The unit is designed to hold any size tubing and permits flanges, joints, broken ends, and the like to be removed easily while leaving a square cut end on the tubing so treated. The machine also serves as a tubing and rod cut-off tool which is adjustable to permit any length of tubing to be cut off with excellent repeatability and squareness, with a minimum of chipping of the glass. Basically, the machine 10 comprises an XY adjustable table 11 carrying on it a delta-shaped extension 12 which extends on both sides of the table 11 and has its major longitudinal axis at 90OE to the direction of the saw 16. On the extension 12 there is positioned a plurality of movable V-blocks 13 each of which is provided with a set of precision adjustable wheels 14. These V-blocks are made so that they can be positioned anywhere along the length of the delta-shaped extension 12 at a right angle to the extension 12. These V- blocks thus can be moved and locked into a place for the entire length of the extension 12 to provide suitable support for any length or size of tubing. By providing the sets of wheels 14 in each of the V-blocks, the material, such as tubing 15, can be readily and easily rotated onto the saw blade when making concentric cuts with the saw 16. To make longitudinal cuts in the tubing 15, the saw 16 can be turned...
