Abstract

Closely spaced fine, bare wires 1 from a cable (not shown) are connected for use in the plug-and-socket connector shown. Wires 1 are positioned in grooves 3 of a base piece 5 and are physically bowed upward. Raised conductive lands 7 on a flexible substrate or board 9 are attached to a housing 11. Housing 11 and base piece 5 tightly fit together, with each land 7 engaging one wire 1, each positioned by a groove 3. The upward bias of wires 1 provides firm electrical contact. Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the separated plug and socket portions. Grooves 3 in base piece 5 are V-shaped to guide wires 1. Grooves 3 terminate at one end of base piece 5 at a depressed channel 13. Each wire 1 is directed into one groove 3. Pin 15 is placed over wires 1 and into channel 13, thereby bowing wires 1 upward.

Substrate 9 is glued or otherwise rigidly attached to the top of housing 11. The remaining open center of housing 11 tightly receives the base piece 5.
