Abstract

An inserter assembly mounted to a transport carriage and a trap mechanism are used to transport a cartridge from station to station between operations. The cartridge can be used to store a length of magnetic tape. A motor is mounted on the inserter assembly to drive a claw carrier for capturing a cartridge and inserting it into the trap mechanism for the next operation. The inserter assembly moves along guides to remove a cartridge from one station and to insert the cartridge into the next station. As shown in the figure, an inserter assembly 1 operates to horizontally drive a claw carrier 3 between stations in a manufacturing process. The transport inserter is mounted to a carriage that provides the vertical motion.

The inserter assembly moves along guides to remove a cartridge from one station and to insert the cartridge into the next station. As shown in the figure, an inserter assembly 1 operates to horizontally drive a claw carrier 3 between stations in a manufacturing process. The transport inserter is mounted to a carriage that provides the vertical motion. A motor and capstan 2 drives a cable 5 which, in turn, rotates a drive assembly 6 to accomplish the horizontal motion of the inserter assembly. The inserter assembly includes guides 7 that cooperate with guide rods 4 to hold the transport inserter. The claw carrier 3 includes resilient members 8 to capture a cartridge 9. A trap mechanism 10 is used to strip the cartridge 9 from the claw carrier 3 of the inserter assembly 1. The trap mechanism 10 includes hinged fingers 11 operated by an air cylinder 12. In operation, the transport inserter 1 picks up the cartridge 9 from the preceding station using the reverse operation as discussed for the input station shown in the figure.
