Abstract

In thermal printing with lift-off correction, such as (1), described in (1), a guide bar or pad brought forward to accomplish correction. Feed rolls nip the ribbon at a location past the guide, and the head presses the ribbon against paper being printed on at a platen. When the guide is moved toward the platen to provide the correction path, the ribbon path is increased. This tends to move the ribbon past the printhead, resulting in both smearing and partial erasure of printed matter under the printhead. These effects are minimized by moving the guide toward the platen only when the printhead is moving across the platen. To effect erasure, the printhead is normally started in motion at a point prior to the printing to be erased. This permits the printhead to reach the operating speed for which the elements are designed.

Where printer operation is controlled by a microprocessor, as is now common, only minor changes in the program are necessary to define the point at which the bar is moved.
