Abstract

A paper cassette assembly 1 has a stack 2 of paper resting on a support pan 3. A feed cycle for feeding the top sheet of paper of the stack 2 of paper from the paper cassette assembly 1 begins with energization of a solenoid 4 to pull a pivotally mounted arm 5 clockwise so that a feed roller 6 is moved into engagement with the top sheet of paper of the stack 2 of paper. When the arm 5 starts to pivot, a motor 7 is energized to begin rotation of the feed roller 6 so that the feed roller 6 is rotating at the proper speed when it contacts the top sheet of paper of the stack 2 of paper.

A feed cycle for feeding the top sheet of paper of the stack 2 of paper from the paper cassette assembly 1 begins with energization of a solenoid 4 to pull a pivotally mounted arm 5 clockwise so that a feed roller 6 is moved into engagement with the top sheet of paper of the stack 2 of paper. When the arm 5 starts to pivot, a motor 7 is energized to begin rotation of the feed roller 6 so that the feed roller 6 is rotating at the proper speed when it contacts the top sheet of paper of the stack 2 of paper. This contact of the feed roller 6 with the stack 2 of paper causes slight depression thereof and allows slight clearance between the top of the stack 2 of paper and a buckler 8, which includes a pair of triangularly shaped plates at corners of the paper cassette assembly 1. The feed roller 6 develops a high normal force for a short period of time to strip the top sheet of paper from the stack 2 to drive the top sheet of paper of the stack 2 out of the paper cassette assembly 1 and onto a feed pan 9. During feeding of the top sheet of paper from the stack 2, the sheet of paper passes an infrared sensor 10, which supplies a signal to a logic control system for stopping the motor 7 after a predetermined period of time and de-energizing the solenoid 4.
